Project Spotlight: Shristi Rural

Combining rural economy uplift with strong environmental impact

Once renowned for its abundant wildlife and biodiversity, today, the State of Odisha in India faces high levels of deforestation and land degradation. Intensive farming practices over the recent years have resulted in an unsustainable environment for communities relying on the land for their livelihoods. Treeconomy is working with a project developer in India to support the sales of carbon removal credits for land restoration projects across the districts of Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj. Credits will be generated from the planting of at least six tree species on the land, to support land recovery, regeneration of ecosystems, and high community co-benefits from revenues generated from agroforestry yield sales. The developer works with grassroots NGOs such as Shristi to ensure local communities are well-represented in their needs. Benefits to the community include local job creation during the project development process, 10% of all carbon revenues, and additional revenue streams from the planting of jackfruit and cashew trees, as well as Asana and Arjuna trees to support silkworm farming to boost the local handicraft and Tassar (wild) silk industries. Shristi is an example of many high-quality, high-integrity carbon projects we are working on with trusted local partners and developers.
