As we pivot into the new year, Treeconomy’s CEO and co-founder, Harry Grocott, takes the helm to shed light on the company’s ambitions for 2024. Delving into three pivotal questions, Harry elucidates the company’s unaltered mission: removing 1Gt of CO2 from the atmosphere through the scaling of nature restoration.
Where are we headed?
Treeconomy uses technology to enable the financing of nature restoration projects. Through the use of high-precision remote sensing & AI programmes we help organisations working on nature restoration projects to receive funding via the payment of carbon removal services, and to receive project finance from institutional investors.
We do this by creating an interface between the natural world, the digital world, and the financial world; we use data from satellites & drones to prove the environmental impact of these projects, allowing money to flow into nature restoration. By proving the exact carbon impact of nature projects we help companies to buy carbon removal credits confidently, and we provide the investors in these projects with accurate performance information.
Our company mission remains unchanged - to remove 1Gt of CO2 from the atmosphere via nature restoration and build a world where restoring natural ecosystems is rewarded financially. This year will see us move from providing our technology in the field to scaling it materially. We step out of small-scale UK projects to large-scale international projects, increasing our operations by about 15x year-over-year.
Do we possess the necessary resources?
To execute our plan and mission we need a few things:
- People
- Projects
- Implementation capacity
- Data & compute
The team we have in place is first-class; we have talent, passion, character, humour, and an appreciation of the task we’ve set ourselves to complete.
Rob & I have spent a lot of time building our network of projects and the developer capacity to implement them, with over 20 Developers and more than 60 projects now in our pipeline. So we’re well placed from a project and capacity perspective.
And of course the key to Treeconomy, and what makes us different, is our focus on actually proving impact through precision data. We’ll have our work cut out for us in keeping up with the increase in data monitoring with the above pipeline, but the engineering team spent a lot of 2023 putting a robust cloud architecture in place to scale with our project pipeline.
What is our relationship with others?
Our business, our mission, is to tackle a global problem. We can’t do this alone, so we integrate and build partnerships.
Our closest relationship is with our project developer network, we view this as a partnership. We’re selective with whom we work, but once we’re satisfied we provide the technical rigour via Sherwood and marketing capabilities through our brokerage product required to build truly world-class, successful nature restoration projects that have impact over decades.
This approach means we can build relationships with specialists, whether this is regional expertise - from the UK to Brazil, Canada, DRC, Kenya, and more - we have experts in these geographies. And it means we work with foresters, ecologists, soil experts, mangrove specialists - all necessary to create truly impactful nature restoration & carbon removal projects. We couldn’t have this much impact at scale if we tried to in-house all of this, so we build networks and partners. Our mindset is about having impact at scale, as quickly as possible.
The really hard work is on the ground with these developers, so our business is to make their lives as easy as possible when it comes to data and financing. We think this is where we can have the most impact as a company.
