At Treeconomy, our mission is to bring trust, transparency, and data-driven decision-making to nature-based carbon and natural capital markets. Over the past nine months, we have been working with Octopus Investments to develop a due diligence tool to streamline investment into nature-based projects. This project was made possible through the UK Space Agency’s Unlocking Space for Business Programme, supporting the integration of satellite-based analytics and disparate geospatial datasets into investment workflows. Now, as we launch the first version of this new tool, we are excited to share how it works and the value it brings to investors and project developers alike.
A Smarter Way to Assess Nature-Based Carbon Projects
Investment in natural capital projects, such as afforestation and ecosystem restoration, is growing rapidly. However, due diligence in this space has traditionally been slow, costly, and reliant on inconsistent data. Our new tool, built on Treeconomy’s state-of-the-art digital Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (dMRV) technology, enhances the assessment process by providing real-time, satellite-driven insights into project viability, risk, and long-term impact.
The tool enables investors and carbon project developers to make faster, more informed, and more confident decisions by embedding satellite analytics directly into their due diligence, evaluation, and reporting workflows. For Octopus Investments, this means greater efficiency in screening and monitoring their pipeline of nature-based projects, advancing their leadership in sustainable finance.
The tool has been developed to support natural capital investors and nature-based project developers to more rapidly, reliably, and confidently screen natural capital opportunities, with a particular focus on prospective afforestation and forest carbon projects.
Pulling on more than 60 different quality-assured geospatial datasets across multiple categories, the tool provides a thorough assessment to guide data-driven investment and project design and development decisions.
Key Features and Benefits
- Satellite-Powered Analytics – Utilises high-resolution satellite analytics to provide a granular view of project sites.
- Holistic Assessment – Evaluates factors such as land-use history, biomass growth potential, and environmental risks, ensuring projects align with investor criteria across permissibility, eligibility, suitability, risk, opportunity, and additional factor considerations.
- Automated Reporting – Streamlines documentation with consistent, transparent data for compliance and stakeholder engagement.
- Seamless Integration – Designed to be embedded into existing investment workflows, reducing manual effort and improving decision-making speed.
The Outcome of a 9-Month Collaboration
This tool marks the successful culmination of a 9-month project, where Treeconomy and Octopus Investments worked closely to define, develop, and deploy an innovative solution tailored to the needs of natural capital investors. The project followed a structured approach, with milestones spanning consultation, development, deployment, refinement, and user testing. With this launch, we are not only delivering a working solution but also setting a new benchmark for how space technology and MRV advancements can be harnessed to drive smarter, more confident, and more rapid investment in nature-based solutions.
What’s Next?
Integrating satellite data into due diligence processes represents a significant leap forward, and we are eager to explore how this approach can evolve to benefit the broader market.
We look forward to sharing more updates as we refine the tool and assess its scalability beyond this initial deployment. Please get in touch via our web form if you would like to learn more or join the early adopters list.
